15 Orient is delighted to announce the opening of a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Deshaun Price. On view in the gallery are nine works; three landscapes and six portraits. Configurative in nature, each work brings together aspects of a life lived and distills them through pictorial form. The eponymous exhibition marks the artist’s first show with the gallery and first solo-show in New York.

Certain thoughts allow for certain actions. Certain actions allow for certain thoughts. An aspect of the parallelism between thought and action well worked out in Spinoza. I couldn’t find a better description of the way painting both allows and requires it’s own kind of thought. An entire orientation bears down the emergence of a specific motif. The construction of a face implies the particular sequence of thoughts and perceptions that allowed it to emerge.
The paintings have always been configurative. Individual bundles of perception, action and intention filtered through material qualities. Accumulated and assembled together with more or less difficulty.
I've been trying to work out the degree to which a change in one's work expresses a change in one's life. I’ve watched as the composition of the works has become less and less distinct from the composition of the life they emerged within.
*"what is mine is first of all my distance; I possess only distances"*
Intimacy or a kind of proximity has been a personal prerequisite for painting. The hand has a territory of its own. It's not surprising its capacities seem drawn out most clearly working with those things-at-hand.
This tendency towards closeness underpins the other variable distances that play out within the works themselves. Between the nearness of the heads and the distance of the horizons, a chain of qualities runs uninterrupted. These qualities mark the coordinates of a territory, a field indistinguishable from the way it is moved through. A piece of infinity so many centimeters wide.
Deshaun Price (b. 1992) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, where he currently studies in the class of Monika Baer at the Städelschule Academy of Fine Arts.
